The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

I finished reading the book called 'The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' written by Ann Brashares. I read 30 pages this week.

Finally, four main characters; Carmen, Tibby, Lena, and Bridget came back their mother country and they felt very happy about they could meet again. At the night, they held the party because they wanted to celebrate that they could meet again in the mother country. Each of them talked about the memory that they experienced during summer vacation. Through the travel in summer vacation, each of them had the precious experiences at the different places and then they could learn the importance of friends and family.

While I was reading this book, I tried to imagine that they could meet again at their home country. It reminded me about myself. In this summer vacation, I went back to Japan for one month and I met again with my friends there. I could sympathize with the main characters' feeling because I also felt happy that I could meet again with my friends in the mother country. Through this book, I could sympathize their feeling and thought many times and also this book remembered me again about the importance of friends.

The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

I'm still reading the book called 'The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' written by Ann Brashares. I read 20 pages in this week.

The chapter that I read this week focused on Carmen. She has a father who remarried with other wife. When Carmen heard that a new wife divorced her old husband in the past because he had a serious drinking problem, she feels sorry to her. After her father and a new wife celebrate wedding, Carmen is requested to live with them. Carmen accepts about it, but after few weeks, she notices herself that her father doesn't care about her at all, and he loves only a new wife and her children. Her father doesn't love Carmen. She is shocked and feels lonely again. She tries to leave from her father's house because she can't believe him anymore.

While I was reading this chapter, I used the reading strategies called 'I try to picture in my mind what I have just read to help me remember what I read'. I tried to imagine that Carmen left from her father's house because she noticed that her father didn't care about her and also he didn't show love to her anymore. I felt sad and I thought that her father was really terrible because he had no responsibility for her. I felt sorry to her when she said 'I eat when I'm happy'.(p.182) She couldn't eat anything for few days because she was really shocked about it. Through this chapter, I noticed that I was very happy since I was born because I had parents and they gave love to me very much.

I almost finish to read this book.

The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

I'm still reading the book called 'The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' written by Ann Brashares. I read 20 pages in this week.

The chapter that I read this week focus on Lena. She went to Greek to meet her grandmother. One day, she is going out for a walk and while she is walking, she finds so beautiful the lake. And she looks over around the pond, and when she confirms that there is no one as far as she can see, she takes off all her clothes without the Pants, and then she tries to get in the lake. But she forgets that if the jeans pants get wet, it will become really heavy, so she is going to sink easily because of the Pants and she yells very loud. She thinks in her mind that 'This is the most perfect moment of my life'. After a few minutes, one boy rescues her from the lake. She doesn't know him but she is really ashamed because she doesn't wear anything without the Pants.

While I was reading this chapter, I used the reading strategies called 'I use a dictionary to help me understand what I read'. I used the dictionary because I didn't understand the word called 'vineyards' and 'meadows'. And I couldn't make sure the meaning of the sentence, 'She discovered a small spring-fed lake.' I tried to search the meaning of 'spring-fed' with the dictionary but I couldn't find the meaning of it. Also I tried to imagine that she got in the lake and she sank into the water. It reminded me about myself. When I was 14 years old, I had swimming class in the school and then I dove into the pool because I thought that this pool is a shallow. But it was really deep pool and then I sank into the water. My classmates helped me and they laughed at me very much. I remembered my stupid experience through this chapter.

The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

I'm still reading the book called 'The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' written by Ann Brashares. I read 20 pages in this week.

The chapter that I read this week focus on Tibby. She lives with her parents and her much younger siblings. When Tibby was little, her father had worked as a journalist and he was always home for dinner. But when her mother decided to move to big, clearn houses, her father started practicing law in a private company, and he was only home about half the night. His father is busy and works late, so her mother expects Tibby to step in and be her coparent. She is a bore about it because she doesn't like her siblings because they are very noisy and wicked babies. Tibby refuses to care of them anymore.

While I was reading this chapter, I used the reading strategies called 'I used a dictionary to help me understand what I read'. I used a dictionary to make sure the word called "coparent" because I was not sure about the meaning of this word. Also I used 'I try to picture in my mind what I have just read to help me remember what I read' in this chapter. I tried to imagine in my mind about one of her siblings was digging both hands in his yogurt and then licking his fingers. And Tibby's mother snatched the yogurt away, and he started yelling. It reminded me about when I was in junior high school student. I had a friend who had much younger sister and she always cared of her sister because her parents went to work. I felt sorry to her because she looked so tired everyday. I thought that to care of young child is very hard thing.

I will continue reading this book.

GIRL

I read the article called ‘Girl' written by Jamaica Kincaid.

This story is about a girl who is educated by her mother to be a nice woman. Her mother is really fussy and annoying parson to her daughter about everything. She always brings up her daughter about the way of washing, cooking, and setting a table for dinner or tea etc... And also her mother says that she must not talk to wharf-rat boys. She always think about her daughter and what is good or bad thing for her future. What do you think about her mother? Do you think that her mother is an annoying person?

When I read this article, I guess the meaning of unknown words or phrases’ in line 7. I try to imagine about a sentence, ‘always eat your food in such a way that it won't turn someone else's stomach’ (in line 7), but I couldn't try to picture in my mind and also I couldn't try to guess the meaning of ‘it turn someone else's stomach’. In class discussion, I could understand the meaning of this sentence. And I used a dictionary to help me understand the meaning of okra, dasheen, pepper pot, doukona, and slut but I couldn't find the meaning of pepper pot and doukona with the dictionary so I searched them with the Internet. I was surprised that her mother doesn't allow her to talk to wharf-rat boys. I thought that she can fall in love with only a rich man. I thought that if I was  a her daughter, I would feel bad because I don't want to dance to mother's tune. And I asked the question myself, Is her mother an annoying or vicious person? My answer will be no, because although her mother is  strict with her daughter, she loves her daughter very much and she just wants her to be good woman.
